How Many Men Suffer From Premature Ejaculation?

Although the adult film industry would have people believe that a real man can spend hours having sex without ejaculating, the truth is that such men are definitely exceptions rather than the rule. (And, of course, when a man is actually engaged in sex, there isn't always the option of stopping for a little while to let the urge to ejaculate lessen.)

Still, men take it as a source of pride when they can "last long" while in bed - and consequently often feel ashamed when they "shoot quickly," that is experience premature ejaculation. Even men who practice exceptional penis care may have an issue with premature ejaculation - and so it is a subject of concern to many.

How widespread?

But just how common is premature ejaculation? There have been quite a few studies on the subject. Not surprisingly, the answers vary.

For example, a 2006 study referenced that worldwide 30% of men experienced premature ejaculation. However, a study from a year earlier quoted a figure of 21%. A 2015 study looking at only Italian men found a prevalence of 18.5%.

Confusion

Clearly, there is some disagreement about how many men experience premature ejaculation. But this problem is compounded by the fact that opinions vary on how to define premature ejaculation. Most men just assume it to mean ejaculating too early, but what is too early to one man (or woman) may be different than what is too early to another man (or woman).

In recent years, there have been attempts to come up with a "universal" definition of premature ejaculation. While this effort is ongoing, more doctors and researchers seem to be basically defining premature ejaculation as the tendency to typically ejaculate within one minute of penetration.

There are other factors that can cause problems with studies, however. One of the biggest is that most studies are based on self-reported information. In other words, it is unlikely that a scientist can set up a study in which a man is actually observed engaging in intercourse so that he can independently measure the time that passes from first penetrating to ejaculation.

Instead, studies rely on men to report whether they experience premature ejaculation or not. Some may not offer a time-based definition, and so a man who considers ejaculating after five minutes may classify himself as premature. And even if time-based definitions are provided, a man may not accurately assess his performance and may over-or under-estimate how long he typically "holds out" before ejaculating.

Frequency

There's also the issue of frequency. A man should pretty clearly classify himself as a premature ejaculator if he ejaculates in one minute or less almost all the time. But what if it's three-quarters of the time? Or half the time?

It's also not at all unusual for a young and/or inexperienced male to ejaculate very quickly when having sex. It's the rare man who, his first time in the game doesn't ejaculate very soon after penetration. With experience often comes skill and the ability to delay ejaculation.

But some men, especially some with low self-confidence, may define themselves as premature ejaculators based on their early experiences, even though they have since learned how to delay ejaculation to a respectable degree.

The scientific world is still struggling with coming up with a definition that allows it to more accurately measure this issue; at the moment, it's probably best to assume that somewhere around 20-25% of men experience some form of premature ejaculation issues. But that percentage could change as more information is uncovered.
