How does stress affect sexual response? First, it is important to remember that achieving an erection is dependent upon both physical and psychological reactions. The psychological reaction to stimuli results in arousal which then triggers the physical response of sending blood flow into the penis and creating an erection.
The physical response to arousal is based on the actions of the autonomic nervous system. It is an involuntary response, like breathing or blushing. The physical response is the result of a careful balance between two chemicals, one that causes body reactions to speed up, and another that creates a calming response. Both are necessary for an erection to occur.
This complex process is a delicate balance. The penis must relax in order for the interior chambers to receive the required blood flow. At the same time, the sexual response causes a man to become excited. This is a necessary part of the preparation for ejaculation and orgasm.
Too much stress can inhibit the body’s ability to relax enough for the penile tissues to fill with blood. Stress will cause psychological impotence. The other side of the stress factor will kick in even if an erection is achieved. Suddenly, thoughts of stress, perhaps from anxiety over his sexual performance, begin to fill a man’s mind causing a physical response. He becomes so anxious that the erection ends abruptly.
In short — stress is not good for an erection and interrupts the erection process.
Stress and the Sexual Catch 22
Stress is a normal part of everyday life. It is impossible to avoid completely. But, not every man who experiences stress also has an issue with erectile dysfunction. When it comes to dealing with male sexual health issues such as ED, stress can impair a man’s ability to perform.
- On one hand, everyday stressors can trigger impotence when stress levels get too high.
- The presence of any sexual dysfunction is a major cause of anxiety for a man without other health concerns.
- Men who are unable to perform sexually withdraw emotionally and blame themselves.
- If the focus of the marriage or relationship is centered on his sexual dysfunction, this compounds an already unpleasant situation.
On the other hand, men are seen as the solution finders. For a man who has a problem as personal and as sensitive as ED, his initial reaction is not going to be to call his doctor or seek the advice of a sex therapist. Instead, he closes himself off and blames himself. He is, after all, supposed to be the strong one, the guy with the answers. If he cannot perform sexually, what kind of a man is he?
This negative thought becomes a slow poison. The end result is a self-fulfilling prophecy. He sees himself as a failure. That distorted view isolates him and he begins to withdraw from sexual situations. His relationship and home life suffer. Parts of his life unrelated to his sexual performance suffer as well.
Lifestyle Changes
There is good news for men with erectile dysfunction. The condition does not have to be permanent. In fact, in the case of an underlying condition, the answer may be as simple as making some lifestyle changes like -
- Losing excess weight
- Cutting back on alcohol consumption
- Kicking the smoking habit.
A positive lifestyle change can be an erection booster.
Medications
Viagra works by relaxing the penis, allowing the spongy tissue to fill up causing a hard erection. It cancels out the substance in the brain that works against regaining an erection. So, why isn’t Viagra the cure for every ED patient’s ills?
While Viagra is a proven treatment, it is by no means the cure-all many men hoped it would be. Viagra is just like any other medication, there are serious side effects. It is not safe for every man desiring an erection to take Viagra.
If you are taking certain heart medications, adding Viagra can be a lethal mistake. It can also be problematic for men who are predisposed to certain eye diseases such as glaucoma.
A recent study revealed that the use of Viagra-type medications for such men can hasten the onset of blindness. Viagra can take up to an hour to work. If you have eaten it will take longer to become effective since it has to make its way through the digestive system.
There is also the danger of becoming too reliant on a pill to generate sexual fulfillment. What if you are not able to take Viagra for the rest of your life? If there is an underlying psychological problem, using Viagra as a quick cure will not work. The mind is command central for sex and it can override any pill or potion.
Consider this: if there is a viable alternative to dependency on a pill for satisfying sex life, wouldn’t it be worth the effort to explore it, especially if it is something you could do yourself to restore your erectile potency?
Vacuum Pumps
Vacuum pumps fit over the penis and create an artificial erection as a result of suction that draws blood into the penis. Once the pump causes an erection, a rubber band is slipped down to the base of the penis to hold the blood in. The band is only safe to use for up to twenty minutes.
Penile injections require training by your doctor. Penis injections are made on the side of the penis through a small needle. The substance injected will either be a quick-acting blood vessel dilator that allows blood to flow in very quickly, or a hormone called Prostaglandin which also promotes a fast erection.
Implants are a less popular method for achieving an erection. They are seen as the court of last resort. Their use is often reserved for men with no other recourse. Two types of implants are generally available.
The first is a rod that is surgically implanted into the urethra. It is flexible but somewhat rigid, and it keeps the penis in a constant state of semi-hardness. The penis is simply folded over when sex is not desired and bent into an erect position when it is.
The other surgical implant (and more commonly used) is an inflatable device that is filled with fluid kept in a reservoir in the abdomen. Erection is achieved by turning on a valve beneath the scrotum and allowing the hollow chamber in the penis to fill. The liquid is then released back into the reservoir following sex.
Both implant devices have risks of failure. You may find the use of such devices clumsy and uncomfortable during sex. You need to physically manipulate the mechanism to achieve the desired state of hardness. Ejaculation is not possible with an implant, though many men are able to orgasm.

Is there any permanent solution for Psychological Impotence?
INTRODUCING: THE MENTAL IMPOTENCE HEALER PROGRAM
Psychological Impotence is a big threat to your relationship with your partner.
“People who suffer from psychological impotence can get an erection, but they lose it under stress.”
In other words, you are able to get an erection when you’re alone — or before sex — but you lose your erection when it comes to the crunch. But you could change all that with the Mental Impotence Healer program.
The Mental Impotence Healer is a digitally mastered guided imagery MP3 recording with theta brainwave music.
The program is designed to put you into a relaxing state of self-hypnosis, so you can receive a series of mental images that activate your imagination and calm your anxiety.
As you listen, you’ll be awake and in full control, yet extremely relaxed and open to the suggestions you hear.
So to get the most out of this program, we would suggest the following:
1. listen to the recording every night before sleep, for at least two weeks up to 30 days. You might feel the desire to masturbate during or after the recording. This is normal and healthy.
2. Continue to listen to the recording most nights until your next real sexual experience with a partner. Notice how much better you feel, and how much more relaxed you are and able to enjoy it.
3. Listen to the recording as often as you want to after this, until you feel that you really no longer need to because your confidence is high and your sex life is great!
